CHAPTER FIVE

Lili skimmed the first chapter before she flipped through the book. “Chapter three has a checklist, but the first thing we need to do is to inventory what we have, including our refrigeration and freezer items. I’ll start with the pantry.”

“Jennie and I will check our refrigerated food,” Pedro said.

“I’ll check the guest house, the barn, and the equipment shed then see what’s in the basement,” Gordo said.

Lili slipped out to her SUV; after she brought in all her firearms and carried them to her bedroom, she returned for her ammunition and put the ammo and the firearms in her closet then hurried back to the kitchen to inventory the pantry.

After an hour, Gordo joined the others in the kitchen.

“I listed our canned goods and staples, but it wouldn’t hurt to use the food checklist in the book as a guideline for grocery shopping, and we’ll need first aid supplies,” Lili said.

“Pedro found canning supplies; I know how to can because I used to help my mother. Pedro can help me.”

“I also found a propane burner in the back; I’ll bet the renters used it for canning. We could use more propane.”

“I added propane to our list for tomorrow,” Lili said.

Gordo said, “I got a call before we left that I have a side of beef at the butcher’s place down the road. We could pick up the meat on our way back from shopping, and I’d forgotten the renters were ham radio buffs; I found a ham radio system in the basement.”

“Really? I had a ham radio license at one time and used a friend’s radio,” Pedro said. “I’ve really missed it. Is there an antenna set up anywhere?”

“I think there might be. I’ll bring up the transceiver and all the other pieces from the basement, and you can check it out,” Gordo said.

“Leave it there because the hookups might be down there. I’ll check,” Pedro said.

After Lili finished copying what was on the list in the book onto her list from the group, she said, “This is a great list. I think we’ll be in much better shape tomorrow after we go shopping.”

“Let’s call it a night, so we can get some rest tonight and get an early start tomorrow,” Jennie said. “Gordo, Lili and I will make your bed while you unpack.”

“You don’t have to do that, Miz Jennie.”

“Yes, she does, Gordo,” Lili’s eyes twinkled. “We want to see your house. It won’t take us long to make your bed.”

Gordo grimaced as he glanced at Pedro. “Would you tell them they don’t have to do this?”

“Can’t help you, Gordo,” Pedro said. “Those two will wear both of us down.”

Gordo sighed. “Go right ahead, Miz Jennie. I’d appreciate it.”

When Lili and Jennie walked into the guest house, Lili said, “It’s not very big. There’s an old sofa and a soft chair in front of a fireplace, and a small kitchenette is near the back door.”

“The house smells clean,” Jennie said.

After Lili led Jennie to the bedroom, she said, “The bathroom is small, and the bedroom is small but not cramped.
